It is time to think of opening the pool and what to check if everything is in place for safety concerns. An outdoor private swimming pool, including an in-ground, above-ground or on-ground pool, hot tub or spa shall be provided with a barrier, which shall comply with the following: if everything is in place for safety concerns. An outdoor private swimming pool, including an in-ground, above-ground or on-ground pool, hot tub or spa shall be provided with a barrier, which shall comply with the following:

  1. The top of the barrier shall be at least 48 inches above finished ground level. The maximum vertical clearance between finished ground level and the barrier shall be two inches.
  2. Openings in the barrier shall not allow passage of 4” sphere.
  3. Solid barriers shall not contain indentations except for normal construction tolerances and tooled masonry joints.
  4. Where the barrier is composed of horizontal and vertical members and the distance between the tops of the horizontal members is less than 45”, the horizontal members shall be located on the poolside of the fence. Spacing between vertical members shall not exceed 1-3/4” in width.
  5. Maximum mesh size for chain link fences shall be a 1-1/4” square inches.
  6. Where the barrier is composed of lattice fence, the maximum opening formed by the diagonal members shall not be more than 1-3/4”.
  7. Access gates shall be equipped to accommodate a locking device. All gates shall be self-closing and self-latching.
  8. Where a wall of a dwelling serves as part of the barrier, then an alarm shall be installed on access doors.
